Growing

Spring is just around the corner and the Farmer’s Almanac is telling us all to prepare for the upcoming planting season. We are to begin a new garden here at Savannah Quarters. I am extremely excited to be part of this project along with Stephen Hendrix our superintendant that will bring us “home-grown” herbs, vegetables, and fruit.

Stephen and his crew began the ground preparation this past week and we have discussed the various items that we plan to grow and harvest. We should have about 4,000 square feet to work with, which is a pretty substantial space. Some items that we will be growing will be 3 to 4 varieties of tomatoes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, okra, pole beans, sugar snaps, peppers, onions, sweet potatoes, carrots, honey dew, cantaloupe, and watermelon. I plan to try some techniques that I learned while working as the Executive Chef at The Jekyll Island Club Hotel from an old Italian gardener who was quite good at “vertical” growing of running plants such as the melons, cucumber, and squashes.  The advantage to this technique is that the fruit and vegetable never make ground contact and therefore don’t have the yellow soft spots.

We’ll keep you posted on how the garden is coming along and I sincerely look forward to the ability to put these wonderful gifts on the table for you to try.
